Antimony Trioxide
The characteristic of Sb2O3 flame retardant agent is its capacity to inhibit free radicals that are responsible for combustion expansion. By synergic effect, its activity is strongly incremented in halogen presence and that is the reason of its exclusive participation in PVC compounds for non-combustible elements’ manufacturing. Its use as flame retardant agent extends to plastics in general, rubber, textile fibers, fabrics, paints, etc.
It is used in frit and enamel formulations. It increases the hardness and chemical resistance of tiles on iron substrates. It is an opacifier in ceramic enamels. It is used as discoloring agent in the glass industry, in additions of 0.1 to 2%. Antimony trioxide’s participation in colored glasses composition reduces the sensibility to color changes as consequence of sunlight exposure. It is used in the formulation of glasses for television tubes and fluorescent lightning.
Other applications: pigments of high weathering and high temperatures resistance; catalyst in polyester polymerization; chemical industry; raw material for the fabrication of antimony trichloride, tartar and pyrotechnic elements.
